Which company is which and how to deal with them

The Who's Who of SBC DSL

Written by: Patrick Oborn - Mar 15, 2010

So you want SBC DSL but you're looking for a bit more information? Make sure you know the company to which people are referring when they try to answer your questions. SBC is actually a group of several companies and they have as many differences as do completely separate companies.

SBC traces its roots to the original Bell Company. It then broke off into the Southwestern Bell Company. Just a few years ago, SBC acquired Ameritech which offers service in the mid west. It also acquired Pacific Bell on the West coast and a few locations on the east. The behemoth of a company offers a service called SBC DSL however the service is provided by the underlying companies which still operate much like separate companies.

Recently Yahoo DSL was introduced which was simply a branding initiative. The underlying service is SBC DSL. When signing up for the service, your experience may be quite different depending on which region you are in. When reading message boards or consumer group's comments on SBC DSL, just make sure you know which region the person is talking about and don't take their comments too seriously if they're not in your region. Once again, these divisions are as different as separate companies because not too long ago they were separate companies. Also remember when reading chat boards and consumer groups that DSL service is highly dependant on your distance from the phone company so complaint people have about bandwidth may not apply to you as they could be farther from the phone company than you and therefore have a weaker signal.

T1 Lines are basically the techno building blocks of the most commonly used business Internet connectivity either used by themselves, or bonded together to form Multi-MB circuits known as technically (NxT1) or marketed as Bonded T1 Lines.

These types of organizations require E3 connections because they transfer large amounts of data from multiple locations.

Under the special purchasing arrangement the CLEC remotely keeps an eye on their servers and their equipment while the LEC is then responsible for alerting the CLEC.

The T1 dependability and consistent predictable data throughput of a T1 Line stands in contrast to DSL connections, which are usually oversubscribed and commonly congested and unreliable.

XO Communications Collocation provides secure, managed, controlled carrier-class space and network access for carriers, which provides faster, cheaper interconnection solutions.

Backbone as it relates to telecommunications is the part of a communications network that handles the major traffic using the highest-speed, and often longest, paths in the network usually consisting of optical fiber and copper wires.

Regardless of which T1 provider you choose, your Service Level Agreement or (SLA) should include guaranteed response times that are measured in minutes or hours, not days or weeks.

T1 circuits can be used in just about every type of application that you can imagine.

The full set of 24 DS0's or channels have the same speed as a full T1 Line, however, the individual DS0 channels may be split into voice lines or data lines using an equipment device called a CSU/DSU or Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit.

Local phone calls are defined as calls originating and terminating within a local access and transport area otherwise known as LATA based calls, which is defined by the Federal Communications Commission.

Installation of a T3 line can last up to a month and this is not calculating the time it takes to ensure that all of the bugs have been worked out.
